Poe

I think that Poe did not have a very good life at all. In the first story that we read "Tell Tale Heart" Poe wrote about a man who had a deep hatred for an old man because of a physical feature of his. I think that this relates to his life because when we researched him we fond out that he was a major critique of people, in many ways. The way that the wrote, or the way that they acted or any other aspect of their lives, and he fixated on that just like he did on the old mans eye in the story. Another thing that I noticed from that story was that Poe made it so that the narrator fixated on the dead man's heartbeat and it eventually made him go crazy. In the second story he talked about death and he also did this in all of the stories that we read by him. We found that death was a big part of Poe's life, his mother and wife both died at young ages, and it really had an impact on him and his writing. In the third story "The Black Cat" the main character blamed everything bad that happened in his life on the black cat that they had found and took in to their home. I think that Poe had a bad life but he didn't know why his life turned out that way so he tried to find every possible reason that he could to blame it on everyone or everything else.

  1. I agree that it seems like Poe did not have a good life at all, and always viewed things on the negative side. I believe that perspective came from his depression and also for viewing himself as almost like a cursed person due to all the deaths around him. I believe in the Tell-Tale Heart the fixation of the eye almost portrayed Poe's very own fixation with death.

  2. That's a really nice point about the blame. Didn't think about that one.

  3. Very good point when you said that Poe had a bad life but he didn't know why his life turned out the way it did. I think because of everything bad that happened it caused him to loose his mind just like he does in most of his stories.

  4. I like the connections you made between Poe's life and the obsession the narrator had with the old man's eye. I didn't make that connection. Very good point. I think you did an all around good job making connections between, Poe's stories, his life, and obsession.

  5. I like your points, especially the fact that he blames everything on the black cat which in his own life he may have blamed all the wrongs that he had done on something or someone.
